The work of Ashrafi and Zad Design is rooted in an architectural design approach that is positioned at the intersection of lightweight, computational design and a celebration of existing narratives related to place and identity.
We focus on how advanced design techniques and technological innovation can benefit and empower communities, how to make our built environments more inclusive, and how architecture can offer opportunities for transformation through representation, respecting the stories of people and place, and offering a sense of belonging and identity.
Ashrafi & Zad Design is an Architecture and Urban Design Studio based in Tehran and Barcelona.
Our team is committed to finding solutions that are at once deeply rooted in the given locality while acknowledging universal identity in a globalized world.
Ashrafi & Zad Design strives for an architecture that enriches daily life, improves our environments, and benefits the communities we serve.
Our work is rooted in the understanding that the influence of any architecture or urban space surpasses the immediate physical impact of the built environment. We believe architecture influences communities by making them feel represented, by shaping constructive narratives around social issues and by presenting possibilities for a better future.

Marziah Zad has developed an architectural design approach that is positioned at the intersection of lightweight, computational design and a celebration of existing narratives related to place and identity.
Marziah developed professional experience in Lebanon, Spain, Iran and West Coast USA before co-founding Ashrafi & Zad Design in 2019. She has instructional experience at the University of Oregon and San Jose State University in California, USA, Shenzhen’s International School of Design at The Harbin Institute of Technology, The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia among others. As an instructor in practice, much of her teaching is based in research, and her design courses focus on the link between investigative digital design techniques and social empowerment issues. She has also collaborated on various research initiatives, including an extensive Global Justice Project focused on lightweight structures for adaptive refugee housing, led by Nancy Cheng of the University of Oregon. This research was funded by a grant from the Savage Endowment for International Relations and Peace.
Through defining geometry as a language of expression that communicates with identity, Marziah takes advantage of her technical experience and personal background to explore how advanced design technologies can benefit communities. She is committed to finding design solutions that are at once deeply rooted in locality while acknowledging a universal identity in a globalized world.
Irene Rodríguez Pérez is an architecture graduate from the School of Architecture of Madrid and holds a post-graduate degree in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities from IAAC. Her work, informed by collaborations with both international and local practices, focuses on the relationship between architecture, memory, and community. She is currently a partner at Estudi Biga, a cooperative practice in Barcelona.
Listed by Architizer in 2019 as a top 10-woman global designer. Bringing awareness to underrepresented communities, as well as creating inclusive urban environments through stakeholder participation has always been a central principle for Raha. Through her experience in participatory and inclusive design, Raha enriches the process by enabling end users to participate in key design decisions, instilling a sense of ownership and pride in the project outcome for everyone involved.
Raha strives to design spaces which are sensitive to their environments, while advocating for equity in design and inclusive spaces for all. Her vision encompasses universal safety, wellbeing and livelihood, while celebrating biodiversity, the natural context, and a commitment to place and existing narratives.
Raha is also the Design Director at Tehran Urban Innovation Center, where she conducts research on various aspects of urban inclusivity, including design strategies for better integration of senior citizens as well as underrepresented communities such as the Deaf community or individuals on the autism spectrum. Her research in 2019 on design guidelines for Deaf and HOH individuals culminated in Ashrafi & Zad’s design of Silk Tree Park, the first Deaf-friendly Park designed in Iran, which was also nominated for Dezeen’s 2022 Design Awards.
I am Saqi, and I am Director of Operations at Ashrafi & Zad Design.
The most important part of my professional role is to facilitate
relationships between team members, clients and other affiliated groups.
Managing the relations of the team and external entities is very important,
since it increases the quality of the work output as well as the work
environment itself. To achieve this, it is my duty to do all the work
efficiently.
Another important part is dealing with contractual and financial matters,
which must be done with the best and most principled methods possible. Since
this issue plays a significant role in improving the quality level of our
collective and our design outcomes, I have completed all the necessary
specialized courses related to these matters.
Furthermore, a central concern for our principles and our team is support
and attention to human resources. We believe that the wellbeing and emotional
health of our team is an integral aspect of the creative process, and so I do
my best to accommodate and find resolution to problems and concerns related to
our team.
My concern in architecture revolves around sustainability in economic, social, and particularly environmental realms. My guiding principle is to achieve the greatest social and cultural impact with minimal physical footprint, through an understanding of the context. I perceive sustainable architecture as the focal point through which I can contribute to creating a more sustainable and healthier planet.
From my perspective, design is a path to strengthen the connection between humans and nature, and among humans themselves. I seek to create spaces that are calming and sustainable, avoiding non-functional form, mere façades, and excess, while shaping quality and meaning through attention to detail.
