FLORA (Forest Lab for Observational Research and Analysis) is an innovative forest canopy observatory located in Collserola Natural Park, Barcelona, developed by students and researchers from the Master’s in Advanced Ecological Buildings and Biocities (MAEBB) at IAAC.
Built as a scientific research facility, FLORA enables researchers to live and work within the forest canopy while monitoring biodiversity, ecosystem health, and the impacts of climate change. Inspired by the pioneering canopy research of biologist Margaret D. Lowman (Canopy Meg), the project demonstrates a replicable model that can be adapted to forests worldwide.
Standing over 8.5 meters high, FLORA was constructed using locally sourced pine trees harvested through sustainable forest management practices. Following a strict “kilometer-zero” philosophy, students processed the timber themselves to produce cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels, laminated beams, and solid wood components. The structure is insulated with natural cork and wrapped in a digitally designed, hand-woven net that encourages vegetation growth, helping the observatory blend into its natural surroundings.
Designed as an immersive ecological prototype, FLORA integrates research facilities, biodiversity monitoring tools, bird observation spaces, and a weather station.
